Regional Trail & Bikeway Committee annual report previews more than 25 miles of new trails coming online across the Tri-State

Wednesday, February 7, 2024 by Pat LaFleur

Leaders from 20 local governments and organizations came together last month to spotlight and celebrate more than 25 miles of trail that were recently completed or are coming soon across the Greater Cincinnati region.

More than 100 trail managers, planners, and advocates convened on January 26 at the Tri-State Trails’ (TST) quarterly Regional Trail & Bikeway Committee (RTBC) meeting, where representatives from city, county, and non-governmental agencies gave their annual status reports on recent and ongoing projects under their jurisdictions.

This year’s report highlighted 13 miles of recently completed trails and 14 miles of upcoming trails across the region’s 10 counties.

“Trails and bikeways are all about connecting people, and the RTBC is all about connecting the people who make trails happen,” said Executive Director Wade Johnston. “None of these projects are possible in a vacuum. By collaborating and learning from each other, we can continue building a world-class trail network connecting our entire region.”

On November 18, 2023, Tri-State Trails held its annual meeting in Lebanon, OH, which included a group ride on the Countryside YMCA trail.

Casey Burdick with the city of Lebanon called the last few years “a whirlwind” before describing what’s up next for the Warren County seat, which includes about a mile of new segment along the Parkside Trail this year and another 3 miles in store for 2025.

“Make sure you talk to your residents and find out their hopes and needs and how comfortable they are using those trails and facilities,” Burdick advised the audience of peers working on similar active transportation infrastructure projects.

As critical to a project’s success as public engagement, speakers repeatedly thanked one another for their partnerships and collaboration across jurisdictional lines.

On December 13, 2023, the community celebrated the completion of Phase 6A of the Wasson Way project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Building trails is certainly a team sport, no doubt,” said Sean McGrory, President of Wasson Way. “It takes a lot of people to make all of this loop work.”

Wasson Way cut the ribbon last fall on its latest segment, Phase 6A, connecting Cincinnati’s Evanston and Avondale neighborhoods to the growing crosstown shared-use trail.

The RTBC’s next quarterly meeting will host a community bike ride on Thursday, April 11, from 3 – 5 p.m., setting out from the Purple People Bridge’s Newport approach on a tour of trail connection opportunities along the Riverfront Commons Trail through Newport, Bellevue and Dayton. The ride is open to all who would like to join and will culminate with a visit to the Dayton Traffic Garden. Register for the bike ride here.
