Connect NKY
By mobilizing trail users and engaging community leaders, we’re working to make biking and walking in Northern Kentucky safer and more convenient.
What is Connect NKY?
Connect NKY is a privately funded effort to expand active transportation infrastructure in Northern Kentucky. This community-powered movement aims to make living an active lifestyle safer and more convenient for everyone by testing on-road bikeways. Connect NKY was founded—in partnership with local nonprofit The Devou Good Foundation.
What do we do?
In October 2019, we successfully implemented Connect NKY’s first demonstration project: the installation of temporary bike lanes in Newport. A combination of two-way protected bike lanes, one-way protected bike lanes and shared lane markings were installed on major thoroughfares in Newport to demonstrate the need for more inclusive pedestrian infrastructure. It allowed bicyclists an opportunity to express their desire for permanent bike lanes, while showcasing the feasibility and cost effectiveness of such investments to local government leaders and decision makers.
Also referred to as “tactical urbanism,” demonstration projects have been successfully used around the world to rapidly and inexpensively prototype new street configurations that better serve the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists—in turn, promoting permanent investment.
