Gearing up for the Tour de CROWN

Thursday, July 27, 2023 by Caitlin Sparks

Are you a registered rider for the upcoming Tour de CROWN? If not, act now, because there’s only a few spots left—register today!

It’s never too early to prepare for your big ride. Here you’ll find ideas and checklists to help you feel confident and ready for the Tour de CROWN.

One month before the Tour de CROWN:

  • Bicycle Tune-Up: Embark on a smoother, more enjoyable ride and reduce the risk of unexpected mechanical issues by getting your bicycle properly tuned-up before the Tour de CROWN. While in the shop, purchase your bike’s correct tube size and carry it with you during your rides.
  • Start Moving: Prepare your body for the physical demands of the ride with regular exercise. Set aside time each day to move and be outdoors.
  • Be Safe in the Heat: Avoid exercising in the hottest parts of the day by shifting your outdoor movements to the morning or evening. By doing so, you can enjoy the benefits of your activity without putting yourself at risk.

The week of the Tour de CROWN:

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Make sure to drink plenty of water the week of and the night before the Tour de CROWN.
  • Eat Up & Eat Well: Nourish your body with a balanced diet to prepare for the Tour de CROWN. This means eating healthy and nutrient-dense foods leading up to the event, including the week before the ride. Fuel up with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates.
  • Sleep Tight: Get a full night’s rest the night before the Tour de CROWN. Your body needs this time to recharge and prepare for the ride ahead. Getting enough sleep will help you stay focused, alert, and energized throughout the day.
  • Study Your Route: Reviewing your route a few days before is always a good idea. Take note of rest stops, bathrooms, and landmarks along your Tour de CROWN route on Ride with GPS.

The day of the Tour de CROWN:
Here’s a list of what you’ll need to feel your best and enjoy your ride to the fullest.

  • A bike in good working condition, with tires properly inflated, brakes working well, and a spare tube.
  • Wearing a helmet during the Tour de CROWN is mandatory. Make sure your helmet fits properly and fastens securely.
  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, such as padded shorts, a jersey, and/or moisture-wicking clothing.
  • A water bottle (or two) or hydration pack filled with water or a sports drink.
  • Your preferred snacks, energy bars, or gels to fuel your body during the ride.
  • Sunglasses to shield your eyes from the sun and wind.
  • Sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Apply before the ride starts and reapply throughout the day.
  • Cycling shoes or sneakers with a good grip.
  • A small repair kit with a spare tube, tire levers, and a pump in case of a flat tire. Not every rider will have these tools, and that’s okay; most Tour de CROWN ride volunteers will carry bike repair tools, and Reser Bicycle Outfitters will deploy a rider support van when needed.
  • A fully charged phone and list of emergency contacts.
  • A small first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers in case of minor injuries.
  • Remember to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

Working with our sponsors and partners, we are taking all necessary measures to ensure your safety, comfort, and enjoyment throughout the day. Thank you for participating and being a part of the first-ever Tour de CROWN, we look forward to seeing all of you in action!

Thank you to the 200+ riders already registered for the Tour de CROWN! We are thrilled to have you on board for this inaugural event. Your support means the world to us, and we cannot wait to see you at the starting line.
