Get in Gear for Tour de CROWN 2024

Wednesday, July 17, 2024 by Pat LaFleur

We’re rapidly approaching Tri-State Trails’ second annual Tour de CROWN on August 24, and if you haven’t already registered, there’s still time!

The Tour de CROWN is a ride for people of all skill levels and abilities, with volunteers leading small group rides ranging from a relaxed 8.5-mile ride to an adventurous tour of the full 34-mile loop (with a 17.5-mile route for those who’d like to split the difference).

This time last year, we were breaking ground on Wasson Way Phase 6A. Today, the trail is open to all, connecting from Blair Court in Avondale to Woodburn Avenue in Evanston. One of our favorite aspects of this segment is the lighting that was installed by the City of Cincinnati in April at the request of the Avondale and Evanston neighborhoods. This year, we’re thrilled to add Wasson Way Phase 6A to the Tour de CROWN 34-mile route.

Even though we’re still about five weeks out from the August 24 ride, it’s not too early to begin preparations. Below you’ll find a list of simple ideas and checklists to make sure you’re fully geared up for the big day.

One month before the Tour de CROWN:

  • Bicycle Tune-Up: Embark on a smoother, more enjoyable ride and reduce the risk of unexpected mechanical issues by getting your bicycle properly tuned-up before the Tour de CROWN. While in the shop, purchase your bike’s correct tube size and carry it with you during your rides.
  • Start Moving: Prepare your body for the physical demands of the ride with regular exercise. Set aside time each day to move and be outdoors.
  • Be Safe in the Heat: Avoid exercising in the hottest parts of the day by shifting your outdoor movements to the morning or evening. By doing so, you can enjoy the benefits of your activity without putting yourself at risk.

The week of the Tour de CROWN:

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Make sure to drink plenty of water the week of and the night before the Tour de CROWN.
  • Eat Up & Eat Well: Nourish your body with a balanced diet to prepare for the Tour de CROWN. This means eating healthy and nutrient-dense foods leading up to the event, including the week before the ride. Fuel up with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates.
  • Sleep Tight: Get a full night’s rest the night before the Tour de CROWN. Your body needs this time to recharge and prepare for the ride ahead. Getting enough sleep will help you stay focused, alert, and energized throughout the day.
  • Study Your Route: Reviewing your route a few days before is always a good idea. Take note of rest stops, bathrooms, and landmarks along your Tour de CROWN route on Ride with GPS.

The day of the Tour de CROWN:

Here’s a list of what you’ll need to feel your best and enjoy your ride to the fullest. While everything listed here is great to have for any length of ride, please note that it’s OK if you don’t have everything listed here with you (except the first two – a working bike and a helmet). The Tour de CROWN is an inclusive event, open to riders of all skill and equipment sets.

  • A bike in good working condition, with tires properly inflated, brakes working well, and a spare tube.
  • Wearing a helmet during the Tour de CROWN is mandatory. Make sure your helmet fits properly and fastens securely.
  • Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, such as padded shorts and/or moisture-wicking clothing.
  • A water bottle (or two) or hydration pack filled with water or a sports drink.
  • Your preferred snacks, energy bars, or gels to fuel your body during the ride.
  • Sunglasses to shield your eyes from the sun and wind.
  • Sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Apply before the ride starts (especially on the back of your neck) and reapply throughout the day.
  • Cycling shoes or sneakers with a good grip.
  • A small repair kit with a spare tube, tire levers, and a pump in case of a flat tire. Not every rider will have these tools, and that’s okay; most Tour de CROWN ride volunteers will carry bike repair tools, and Reser Bicycle Outfitters will deploy a rider support van when needed.
  • A fully charged phone and list of emergency contacts.
  • A small first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers in case of minor injuries.
  • Remember to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.

Thank you to the 200 riders already registered for the Tour de CROWN! Working with our sponsors and partners, we are taking all necessary measures to ensure your safety, comfort, and enjoyment throughout the day. We are thrilled to have you onboard for this year’s even bigger and better Tour de CROWN. Your support means the world to us, and we cannot wait to see you at the starting line.
