Fix your bike on the go with our new repair stations

Thursday, March 5, 2020 by Wade Johnston

For bikers, there’s no bigger bummer than realizing mid-ride that your seat is wobbly or your brakes need adjusting—except maybe the thump-thump of a flat tire. Trust us, we’ve been there. That’s why we’re so excited to announce our new public bike repair stations are open and ready for use!

These stations feature the most commonly used bike repair tools, like pedal wrenches, hex key sets, tire levers and tire pumps. They’re perfect for both quick fixes and preventative tune-ups, plus using them is a cinch. Simply pull up, select the tool you need, make your repair and hit the road. The best part? They’re free to use, day or night.

If you aren’t sure whether your bike needs some on-the-go attention, just remember to do an “ABC Quick Check.”

A is for air

Look on the side of your tire to find the proper pressure for your tire. It should say “maximum pressure # bar or # PSI.” Use the air gauge on the pump to inflate to the right pressure.

B is for brakes

Make sure brake pads do not rub the tire and that you can fit your thumb between the brake lever handlebar when the brakes are squeezed tight.

C is for cranks and chain

Pull your cranks away from the bike and tighten the bolt if they are loose. The chain should move smoothly and be free of rust and gunk.

Quick is for quick releases

Your quick releases should be closed tightly and pointing to the back of the bike, so they don’t catch on anything.

Check is for check it over

Hop on and make sure everything’s working properly.

So far, we’ve installed two bike repair stations in Northern Kentucky. One can be found at the Newport entrance of the Purple People Bridge. The other is located at the Covington branch of the Kenton County Public Library. We plan to install additional stations in Avondale and other neighborhoods around Cincinnati soon.

At Tri-State Trails, we believe biking for exercise or transportation should be safe, convenient and enjoyable for everyone. We hope our bike repair stations will help keep you moving the next time you’re out for a ride.

In the meantime, we’re celebrating the launch of our new stations with a ribbon cutting. Join us Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. at the Covington branch of the Kenton County Public Library for cookies, refreshments and a special announcement from the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeways Commission. You’ll also have a chance to win one of 10 copies of the “Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair,” a go-to guide for any DIY biker. You can find more information about the ribbon cutting event here.
