The Whitewater Canal Trail is a treat for everyone. This flat, crushed-gravel trail meanders through wooded forests and river valley landscapes offering rich scenery and diverse wildlife in the quiet countryside. The trail runs parallel to the historic Whitewater Canal, through the charming town of Metamora, and adjacent to farmland and conservation landscapes making this one of the most scenic biking and hiking trails in the region.

If you’ve never been to the Whitewater Canal Trail, or it’s been a while since your last visit, now is the time to make the trip to Franklin County.  After years of dedication by a small group of volunteers, the trail recently built some significant connections. What used to be three noncontiguous trail segments has now connected into a cohesive 11-mile trail spanning from Laurel Fedder Dam Trailhead almost all the way to downtown Brookville.

In early November, Tri-State Trails joined organizers from Whitewater Canal Trail Inc., to ride new sections of the Whitewater Canal Trail. Starting at the Laurel Fedder Dam Trailhead the group rode at a casual pace stopping to collect GPS data at each trail mile. This data helps organizers share the story of their trail through Tri-State Trails’ Find A Trail interactive online map.

In any season trail users can turn this 11 mile trail into an all day adventure. Multiple trailheads allow users to modify their mileage to accommodate any schedule. Along the trail, sturdy benches coupled with interpretive signs tell stories of historical happenings and offer a place to sit and enjoy the region’s flora and fauna.

The Whitewater Canal Trail has grown and flourished through the work and persistence of many volunteers–we encourage you to explore what they’ve built. Invite friends or find peace in solitude as you discover this cultural corridor.
